In 16 Vincent began to work for an art dealer called Goupil & Co. In 1873, he was transferred to London, and later on to Paris. Vincent became very interested in religion due to his move to Paris. In 1876, Vincent was terminated from work due to his lack of motivation. Shortly after being dismissed Vincent returned to Amsterdam to study theology, but he soon dropped out to become a preacher in Belgium. His intentions were to preach to the miners there. He visited the sick, injured, and spoke at meetings. After Vincents 6 month contract was up, he remained preaching without pay for some time. It was then in 1880 Vincent’s’ brother Theo suggested that he take up painting. Vincent finally decided to make a serious effort to become an artist. In 1881, after nine months of extra education in Brussels, he moved back in with his parents and decided to teach himself to draw. He focused on studying different techniques and styles of art, along with perspective, shading, and anatomy. Most of his earliest work focused on the peasantry, probably due to his time with the miners. Vincent attended a painting lesson from Anton Mauve and soon the two clashed over their difference in artistic views. Although Vincent learned a lot from his lessons, he distinct use of colors sets him far apart from his teacher. Van Gogh’s paintings were very beautiful to the people of 1890, however, until his death he wasn’t a known artist. He lived more than 100 years ago, yet his art is still serving to influence views on beauty, individuality, and style, many have copied his works but none has been able to duplicate his works. Many artists today mimic the van Gogh’s style in their own works. An artist that admired Vincents work is Stefan Duncan. He uses many colors together in a pattern he calls Squigglism. He turned Vincents strokes to long curvy lines.Vincent is very known for his use of colors in his work. His drawings often depict light, figures, and landscapes. He drew using pencils, chalk, and charcoal. When drawing Vincent often mixed mediums. The beginning of Vincent’s career and his very last painting shows a lot of growth as a  painter. When he first began with art he usually used dark, melancholy colors that reflected his subjects during the time such as the minors and laborers. Vincent adapted to using brighter colors when he moved to Paris in 1886. He used reds, yellows, oranges, greens, and blues. His choice of colors, usually reflected his mood. Back in the Vincents time period NO other artist was painting based on mood. As quoted Gogh said “instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make more arbitrary use of color to express myself more forcefully”. Vincent painted with a sense of urgency. A thing that makes Vincent van Gogh recognizable is the brush strokes that he used in most of his work the brush strokes are layered Over each other and you can see the brush strokes in the artwork that he has done His bold strokes expressed emotion and added movement to many of his works. Van Gogh had a thick application of paint, this was called impasto. The color that he has used Throughout his artwork by using dark and warm colors and he has layered color on top of each other that show a little piece of the color under it. The common elements that are shown in Van Gogh work are the texture and color. The texture that is used in the artwork are the layering of the brush strokes and the uses of the color, all the warm and dark color that are used in his artworks.Vincent was one of six children. Vincent was the closest with his brother Theo, who was one year younger than him. Theo gave Vincent financial support all throughout his lifetime. Theo tried to also support Vincent emotionally. The two brothers shared a set of letters. These letters became one of the most moving documents in the history of western art. Theo admired Vincent but at times communicating with Vincent was very hard for Theo. He was worried about Vincent’s mental condition and was one of the few that understood his brother. Vincent had a hard time with his mental illness. He suffered from depression, anxiety, and many say he had a bipolar disorder. Vincents disorder began to reveal itself, he hallucinated and had attacks in which he lost consciousness.  All of these factors eventually drove Vincent into taking his own life. He suffered from some sort of crisis and on December 23 1880 he cut off part or practically his entire ear. He was said to offer his ear to a prostitute afterwards. Vincent was later found in his bed unconscious and had lost a lot of blood. After 1890 the attacks became more frequent. Doctors even believed that Vincent began to eat paint. In order to prevent another breakdown Vincent voluntarily entered an asylum. The institution helped Vincent drastically and soon he was well enough to begin working again. He painted in the walled garden and soon he was allowed to paint outside. Soon he was given an extra room to use as a studio where he produced lots of work. Painting was one of the things that helped to calm Vincent but after suffering from mental disorders so long without being treated it became eat too much which led up to Vincent killing himself. On July 27 1890 he was alleged to have shot himself and died 2 days later in his brother’s arms. Vincent painted over a 1,000 paintings in his lifetime.  One of the pieces he created is called ” the potato eaters”. The Potato Eaters is a painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh that he painted in April 1885 while in Nuenen, Netherlands. It is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. He made this painting because it describes the meaning of the poor and rough times of people. The art to me describes the meaning of the struggle of people and how they made it through the hard times.Starry Night, Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view outside of his sanitarium room window at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, part of the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest, since 1941. The painting is among Van Gogh’s most well-known works and marks a decisive turn towards greater imaginative freedom in his art. In starry night I like how the lights in the sky reflect on the water, it gives me a feeling of calmness.  Van Gogh also painted Wheatfield with Crows, It is commonly stated that this was van Gogh’s last painting. However, art historians are uncertain as to which painting was van Gogh’s last, because no clear historical records exist. It is said that the sky foreshadow the death of Vincent van Gogh. In my opinion, this painting portrays depression, sadness, and loneliness. It is unique for its vigorous strokes, its dark, stormy sky accentuating the contrast with the yellow wheat and the presence of the crows. Van Gogh also produced a painting called sunflowers. He did them in Arles, in the south of France, in 1888 and 1889. Vincent painted a total of five large canvases with sunflowers in a vase. The Colors used in paintings help the artwork come to life. In sunflowers, both primary and secondary colors were used. The colors also gave off emotions. Yellow is a bright color it may be described as cheery or warm. Vincent used both and organic shapes in sunflowers. Some interpret sunflowers as a symbol of  faith. The art museum of Philadelphia owns one of the sunflower paintings. Last, a painting that I found significant is ” Bedroom in Arles”. It is an oil, canvas painting. It is located in the Amsterdam in The Van Gogh Museum. Oil pastels and oil paint were his main mediums in this painting. It appears to be a one point perspective. It uses colors to give the painting a bright feeling and tone.
